Energy-saving green venues

According to the introduction, all new venues of the Winter Olympic Games and the Winter Paralympic Games adopt high standard green design and construction technology, and insist on “building energy saving, building land saving, building water saving, building material saving, and protecting the environment” in the construction of venues, and all new venues have obtained the three-star green building design logo.

In order to achieve the goal of carbon neutrality of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games, the green electricity produced by wind and solar energy in the Zhangbei area will be imported into Beijing through the Zhangbei flexible DC power network project, and all venues of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games will achieve 100% green electricity supply during the event.

The National Speed Skating Stadium, Wukesong Sports Center and other Winter Olympic venues choose carbon dioxide cross-critical refrigeration system, the temperature difference between the ice surface is controlled within 0.5℃, the carbon emission is close to zero, this technology is applied to the Winter Olympic Games on a large scale, which is also the first time in the history of the Olympic Games, while using the integrated design of combined heat and cold supply to recycle the waste heat of refrigeration, energy efficiency is improved by 30-40%.

Building a low-carbon transportation system during the games

The Beijing-Zhangzhou high-speed railway will provide transportation operation services for the transit between the three competition areas of the Beijing Winter Olympic Games. The race-time traffic operation policy encourages spectators to give priority to high-speed rail, subway and bus travel; promotes the use of electric and hydrogen energy vehicles in each competition area, ensures the basic use of clean energy for event service passenger vehicles in the competition area, and improves vehicle operation efficiency through intelligent transportation systems and management measures.

Biodegradable tableware

Supported by the concept of “Green Olympics” and “Development Olympics”, the Beijing Winter Olympic Organizing Committee upholds the vision of “Sustainability – Towards the Future” and uses biodegradable tableware in the preparation of the Games. The use of biodegradable tableware in the preparations for the Games will help amplify the positive environmental impact through the international power of the Winter Olympics. The athletes’ lunch boxes and tableware are made of polylactic acid (PLA), a biodegradable material derived from the biomass we usually see in corn, sweet potatoes and sorghum.

Compared with traditional plastic products, biodegradable tableware in the process of processing, incineration will not produce toxic and harmful gases to pollute the atmosphere; landfill will not be long-term, a large number of occupied land, the formation of white pollution, land pollution and other issues; processing without pre-sorting, simplifying the processing links, saving human resources costs; compost buried 6 ~ 8 months, can be metabolized by the microorganisms in the soil, and eventually degraded to the natural harmless carbon dioxide and water.

Biodegradable plastic bags

In September 2021, Sinopec subsidiary donated 100,000 biodegradable plastic bags to Zhang Shanying town, the location of Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games in Yanqing, mainly for the services of the event venues and the needs of citizens’ life, which will help reduce plastic pollution during the operation of the event and help green the Winter Olympics.

According to reports, the donation of biodegradable plastic bags are made of PBAT biodegradable plastic as raw material. Compared with traditional non-biodegradable plastic, this plastic not only has better thermal stability and mechanical properties, making plastic bags more durable; but also has excellent biodegradability and can be completely degraded to water and carbon dioxide under composting conditions, which is the mainstream biodegradable material in the current biodegradable market.

Biodegradable packaging bags

In the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games uniform equipment design, production, distribution and other aspects also implement the same green sustainable development concept: the yarn used in the equipment storage bag is recycled using waste plastic products to produce environmentally friendly yarn; the packaging bag is made of biodegradable materials, and the 180-day degradation rate can reach more than 90%.
